Screen Savers, Demos and Games

This document describes the screen savers, interesting demonstrations and games that are available on Solaris 2.5 systems.

NOTE: If your hard disk is unusually full and you wish 15 megabytes more disk space, you can remove these non-business distractions by entering the following commands from an XTerm window.

      % su
      # rm -rf /usr/openwin/demo
      # rm /usr/openwin/share/images/fish/*
      # rm -rf /usr/demo/SOUND

SCREEN BLANKER - If you wish your screen to become blank after a period of time, select the following sequence: Workspace | Properties | Category | Miscellaneous | Screen Saver. Press 'Auto' and enter '10' minutes. After you press 'Apply', the screen will become blank after 10 minutes of no keystrikes or mouse movement.

You can also cause the screen to become blank by entering the following command in an XTerm window.

    % xset s blank s 3

This command blanks the screen after 3 seconds elapse without a keystrike or mouse movement. This command stays active until the next reboot. To clear this command, enter the following command into an Xterm window.
    % xset s off

SCREEN SAVER - You can cause the screen to show various sizes of the "X" trademark with the following command in an XTerm window:
    % xset s noblank s 2 1
This command waits 2 seconds before invoking the X screen saver and changes the size every second. To clear this command, enter:
    % xset s off

SCREEN LOCK - Another screen saver that includes a screen locking feature can be invoked by the XTerm command:
% xlock -timeout 2 -mode swarm
This command will wait 2 seconds to execute the screen saver that locks the screen with swarms of color. The screen can be unlocked by hitting any key or moving the mouse and then entering the login account password. In addition, the 'swarm' argument may be replaced with 'hop', 'life', 'qix', 'rotor', 'pyro', 'flame' and others. With the 'blank' argument, the screen will become blank as above as well as locked. This command is active only once.

SOUND - You can play sounds on your Sun workstation (except Sparc4's) with the following command:
    % audioplay /usr/demo/SOUND/sounds/laughter.au
There are other sound files in that directory. Of course, you can create a script that uses this sound command. Open the Text Exitor and enter the following text:

    #!/bin/csh -f
    #
    top:
    xmes -bg lightblue 1 "For a good time. . ." 2 " Press Here " " Push Here "
    if ($status == 1) then
      audioplay /usr/demo/SOUND/sounds/laughter.au
    else
      audioplay /usr/demo/SOUND/sounds/flush.au
    endif
    goto top
Save the text in a file called 'fun'. Be sure to give execute permissions for this file with the command:

    % chmod +x fun
You can run this script with the command:

    % fun

FISH - You can turn your $5000 computer into a $500 aquarium with the command:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/realxfishdb -f16 -r0.1 -i0.1
This aquarium is a good weekend screen saver. However, it uses a great deal of CPU time and should not be in operation during Shaker Control tests.

There is even a chart with which you can select your fish. Use the command:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/fish_props

      use the selections:
        Display Mode: Single Buffered
        Sea Sickness: On
        Time between Updates: 15
        Update Increment: 15
Fish selection: 16 to 20 of your favorites

This command creates the file '~/.fishrc' that will be used to describe the aquarium when you give the command:

    % /usr/openwin/demo/realxfishdb &
More information is in the manual pages
    % man realxfishdb

PUZZLE - Before Rubic's Cube, there was the sliding tile puzzle of 15 numbers. Enter the command:

    % /usr/openwin/demo/puzzle
Just select the tile that moves into the blank space and the program will move it for you. You may move more than one tile at a time.

The object is to arrange the tiles with the numbers in order (1, 2, 3, 4) across the top until the bottom row is 13, 14, 15, blank.

SOLITARE - The classic card game of Solitare is available with the command:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/xsol
and the information manual can be found at:
    % man xsol

ASTEROIDS - How quick are your reactions? Test your skill with the 'Texteroids' test. Use the mouse to kill the flying letters after you have entered the following command:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/texteroids
The information manual can be found at:
    % man texteroids

LOST CURSOR? - You will always be able to find your cursor with the command:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/xeyes
Cross-eyes occurs when you place your cursor between his eyes.

Help text can be found at:
    % man xeyes

MAZE - Solve a maze, or let the system solve it for you. Be sure to press the 'Center' mouse button after a new maze is drawn to prevent the solution from appearing too quickly. You can also print the maze with Snapshot and try to solve it on paper.
    % /usr/openwin/demo/maze

SPIDER (DOUBLE DECK SOLITARE) - A slightly different game than the standard solitare. Please read the Rules before play.
    % /usr/openwin/demo/spider
There is more information in the manual pages accessed with the command:
    % man spider

GRAPHICS DEMOS - Several demonstrations of the graphics ability of the Sun workstation are available. As always, the manual pages can be accessed with the '% man' command.

        % /usr/openwin/demo/xmag_multivis

    2. Create crawly worms

        % /usr/openwin/demo/worm

    3. Full graphics demo.

        % /usr/openwin/demo/xgc

    4. Paint plaid patterns

        % /usr/openwin/demo/plaid

    5. Draw interesting patterns

        % /usr/openwin/demo/muncher

OPENLOOK WINDOWS DEMO - Several interesting demonstrations of the available menu selection types that are available in OpenLook Windows are found in:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/olitsampler
and
    % /usr/openwin/demo/olittable

MAE (Macintosh Application Environment)- A marketing demonstration of the Apple Macintosh can be created with the command:
    % /usr/openwin/demo/add/MAE_info

PHOTO-CD VIEWER - If you have a cdrom reader and a photo cd disk, you may be able to display the pictures. Please check the manual pages with the '% man runpcdviewer' command. The photo cd program is run by the command '% /usr/openwin/demo/runpcdviewer'.

Some 'tiff' format pictures are already installed. Enter: ' /usr/openwin/demo/profile_demo'. Then double click on the '../images' directory and then double click on the '../tiff' directory and then select and image to display.
