Q: What type of security arrangement does STAR6 use?.

STAR6 is limited to installation onto a single PC. At the completion of the install process double clicking on the STAR6 icon will provide a Registration number and you will need to get a Key number from Spectral Dynamics via either phone or email. Once, you have the Key number enter the value and this completes the installation process.

STARv6.1 uses a floppy based security key so, the user can install the software on as many PC as they feel necessary. The only requirement is that in order for the software to run the floppy security key must be in the floppy drive.

Q: How can I get UFF measurements into STAR6?.

Spectral Dynamics provides a utility called Measfe.exe to convert UFF files to STAR v5 files. Once, the files are in STAR format then import them into a STAR6 *.SDD file format.

Q: Does STAR6 have something similar to the Gateway that used to be in STAR.

Yes, in STAR Modal version 6.1, under the Help menu, click Show Assistant. The Show Assistant has a tab called Checklist. This checklist provides you with a list of the steps to complete a Modal test.

Q: What display resolution do I need to run STAR6?.

STAR6 needs a desktop/notebook that supports XGA and a display resolution of 1280 * 1024.

Q: What display resolution do I need to run STAR6?.

Yes, STAR6 will still operate with a display resolution of less than 1280 * 1024. However, you will not see the entire STAR6 window and therefore it will be much more difficult to navigate through STAR6.

Q: Installing STAR and I get the message "Permission Denied"

A: Remove the write protection from Disk Number 1.

Q: Do I want the install the Demo GPIB Drivers?

A: Yes, only if you do not collect your data via the National Instruments GPIB board.

Q: Do I need to install the Network Security servers?

A: No, not unless you plan to use STAR over a Novell IPX/SPX or Windows for Workgroups networks.

Q: My system does not recognize my network security module?

A:For both Windows 95 and Windows NT you must run the NSRVGX.EXE security server before running STAR. This program can be run directly from within Windows and is located in the C:\STAR directory. For Windows 95, it may also be necessary to install the security module system drivers located in the WIN_95 directory on Disk #7 of the STAR 5.2 or later distribution set.

Q: I am installing STAR and only three of the four STAR diskettes are installed?

A:Diskette number four is the demo data for the Advanced Curvefit option, so if you do not have this option then these files will not be installed.

Q: In STAR v5.2, I cannot Print my structure, No Print dialog appears.

A: Follow the folowing procedure:

Click on Show Structure
Click on the Edit menu
Hit the ALT key
Hit the Enter key
Hit the Enter key
Hit the Up Arrow key until the dialog is visible on the screen
then Click on the Project menu
Click on Save Configurations

Now the when you restart STAR the next time it will apppear where ever you had positioned it when Save Configurations was selected.

Q: Only one point is moving in my Show Structure window:

A: Open the Show Measurement window:
Click File
Click Open
Compare two of the filenames to the following:

001Z002Z.FRF
001Z003Z.FRF

For the above measurements 1Z is the reference, for a fixed
excitation test. Therefore,
Click on the Project Menu
Click on the Project Slate
Click Fixed Excitation
Set the Driving point to 1Z.
OR

010Z004Z.FRF
011Z004Z.FRF

For the above measurements 4Z is the reference, for a fixed
response test. Therefore,
Click on the Project Menu
Click on the Project Slate
Click Fixed Response
Set the Driving point to 4Z.

Clear the Frequency Results Table and refit data.

Q: Can Operating Deflection Shapes testing be done without the TDA/ODS option?

A: Yes, but the results table values with be relative rather than absolute.

Q: The Response Data Spectrum is greyed in the Show Measurement Analysis menu.

A: There are two possible causes for this:

1) You have not purchased the Time Domain Analysis/Operating Deflection Shapes option.

2) Make sure that a Cross Power or a Frequency Response measurement
is open in the Show Measurement window.

For STAR v4.2 through v5.1, make sure that the Auto Power Spectra do not have an A or B attached to the filename i.e.. 005ZA.APS. If it does then rename the file to 005Z.APS.

If the FRF method is being used, there is not a driving point Auto Power Spectrum in the project directory, as specified in.

Q: What does the STAR ASCII format consist of?

A:
Datatype: <tab>FRF choices APS or COH or CPS or FRF or TIM
Blocksize: <tab>801 =<320000
Xlow: <tab> 0.000
Deltax: <tab>0.5

Channel 1
Point: <tab>-033Z
Channel 2
Point: <tab>001Z

FREQ<tab>REAL<tab>IMAG
0.000<tab>-28.1234<tab>5.0001
Additional references can be found in the STAR Users Manual, Data Disk Translator section, page 17.

Q: I ran the Modal Peaks function and did not see any display.

A: Open the Show Measurement window
Click the Block menu
Click Block 2

The display will be an auto spectrum type, this display is a linear summation of all the peaks that STAR found within the project measurement data set.

Q: How do I convert measurements from the Bruel & Kjaer analyzers BK2144 and BK2148?

A: Use the Data Disk Translator utility provided with STAR DSK2STAR.EXE. Refer to the STAR Users manual, Data Disk Translator section (2nd green tab).

Q: How do I convert measurements from the Larson Davis LD3100?

Use the LD3100.EXE conversion utility located in the \STAR\UTILITY directory.

Q: How do I convert SDF measurements stored to disk from the HP35660, HP35665, HP35670, HP3565, HP3566/67 or HP3569?

A: Use the Data Disk Translator utility provided with STAR DSK2STAR.EXE. Refer to the STAR Users manual, Data Disk Translator section (2nd green tab).

Q: How do I convert measurements from the Larson Davis analyzers LD2800, LD2900 and LD3200?

A: Use the Data Disk Translator utility provided with STAR DSK2STAR.EXE. Refer to the STAR Users manual, Data Disk Translator section (2nd green tab).

Q:I have a AT-GPIB/TNT card how can I get the Windows95 drivers for this card?

A: Download the latest version from the National Instruments FTP site. Go to ftp.natinst.com/support/gpib/win95/drv-english/disks and Download all the files.

Q:I have installed STAR v5.2 (or later) in Windows 3.x or Windows 95 system with my existing AT-GPIB/TNT or AT-GPIB card. I am getting a message "No GPIB Board Found". What do I need to do the solve this problem?

A:You will need to download the compatibility release of the GPIB drivers. This will allow STAR's 32 bit GPIB calls to communicate with your existing GPIB board. Download the file COMPAT11.ZIP. Note: Be sure and read the README.TXT file on this FTP site.

Q: STAR crashes when I exit or save a STAR project.

A:Although, STAR is a 32 bit application, STAR does not truly support long filenames. This error is caused by the project filenames and directory names with greater than eight characters. Keeping the project names eight characters or less and things will work just fine.

Q:I am getting a error message: Error Writing to Disk. Disk Full. And I know I have plenty of disk space on my hard drive.

A:Check the properties of the STAR Project files you are trying to open, such as.. *.PRJ, *.AFT, *.MDL, *.CRD, *.DSQ and also the measurement files. These files properties are probably set to Read only.

Q:I am getting a error message: Driving Point Residue = 0

A:When you went through the curvefit process STAR did not find a driving point measurement. Therefore, when using SDM or Exporting the Modal Shapes file where the driving point residues is needed for scaling this error message will occur.

Another possible reason, is if you are doing a SDM and the data was curvefit with the Fit Error enabled. In this case, it will be necessary to clear the Frequency Results table and refit the data trying to perform the SDM again.

Q:I am running the STAR Password program in Windows NT and I am getting an error message: Can't find SC16W.DLL.

A:The SC16W.DLL file needs to be placed in the c:\star\utility directory or just the star_directory\utility directory. This file can be found on Disk #2 of the STAR System distribution set.

Q:I am running STAR on a Toshiba Tectra 700CT laptop and it will not find the key.

A:Make sure that there is a default printer installed. If not then the parallel port has not been enabled and this is the most like cause of your problems.
