STAR in Windows XP

After STAR has been successfully installed.

Do the following:
  1. Create a XP Desktop Shortcut for STAR
    1. Right click the STAR shortcut.
    2. Click the Properties menu
    3. Click the Compatibilities tab
    4. Click the check box for "Run With" and select Windows 2000
    5. Click OK
  2. You will need to install the Rainbow Sentinel Drivers.
    Note: you must have Administrative privileges in order to do the following installation.
    1. On the STAR CD, goto the \win_nt directory
    2. Double Click setupx86.exe
    3. Click the Function menu
    4. Click Install Sentinel Drivers
    5. Hit the Enter key, the path to the drivers is correct.
    6. You will see a message when the installation is completed and successful. The PC will need to be rebooted.
  3. Rerun the setupx86.exe program, again
    1. Click the Function menu
    2. Click Configure Sentinel Drivers, if the dialog appears empty/blank do the following:
      1. Click the Add button
      2. The Add Port dialog will appear
      3. Click the Use Port? to Yes
      4. Set Bus Address = 378
      5. Set Bus Number = 0
      6. Set Bus Type = ISA or PCIBus
      7. Set Address Space = I/O
      8. Set Port Type = IBM AT
      9. Port Ownership Method = Automatic
      10. Click OK
    3. The above parameters will be added to the Sentinel Drivers dialog
    4. Click OK
    5. You will see a message to restart your PC.
Note: When I did this, and rebooted Windows XP, I got the "blue screen of death". This pointed to a problem with sentinel.sys and also suggested checking the BIOS settings. I went to the BIOS and modified the Parallel Port configuration under Peripheral Configuration. I changed the Mode from Auto to Bi-directional and set the Base I/O address to 378, the same as was set when configuring the Add Port.
